The Inglewood Police Department has released the following statement in response to today’s Los Angeles Times coverage:
“City leadership and the Inglewood Police Department take the issues raised in the Times’ coverage very seriously, and we have been at work for months in implementing reforms aimed at improving how our officers go about their jobs.
Importantly, a series of independent and administrative reviews continue and include a comprehensive audit of the Police Department’s policies and procedures by the respected Los Angeles County Office of Independent Review (OIR). We anticipate receiving recommendations arising from these reviews early in 2009. At the same time, all Inglewood police officers are undergoing a customized 120-hour training program that is designed to boost professionalism and accountability, elevate tactical response, and improve decision-making in a range of situations, including incidents involving use of force.
The cases highlighted in the Times’ coverage are not new to us, the District Attorney’s Office, or other federal investigative agencies. We have committed to continue our effort to aggressively deal with the troubling issues raised in the article. We will also continue our critical dialog with Inglewood residents and keep the community at large updated on our progress.’’
