Inglewood, CA (May 25, 2011) - The Inglewood City Council has appointed Mr. Artie Fields as their new City Manager. The appointment concludes a nationwide search to find a talented and progressive manager to lead the organization into the future.
Fields, a native of California, is a 25-year veteran in local government. He is no stranger to Southern California, having been employed for 10 years in the City of West Covina, before being hired to his most recent position as City Manager for the City of Salinas. While in West Covina, Fields served in several positions including Acting City Manager, Acting Community Services Director, Acting Finance Director, and Acting Human Resources Director.
Fields stated, "While my career has allowed me to work in all facets of local government, I have four areas of expertise that will assist me in being successful in the City of Inglewood, which are: Budgeting and Finance, Community Revitalization, Economic Development, and Citizen Engagement."
When asked to name his top five accomplishments at the City of Salinas, Fields indicated that he was most proud of 1) Hiring one of the best police chiefs in the nation and the significant achievements that the entire police department have made to improve public safety in the city; 2) Working with the Economic Development Director to lay the groundwork for and implement policies to diversify, attract, and retain businesses in Salinas; 3) Developing the plan to streamline the organization and improve service delivery and cost savings; 4) Working with staff to apply for a record number of grants that allowed Salinas to make significant improvements to its infrastructure and beautify its public spaces; and 5) Increasing the level of community engagement that occurred during his tenure, which was essential to solving the many challenges that Salinas faced during the last three years.
Inglewood Mayor James T. Butts, Jr., gave an unqualified endorsement of Fields' experience and capacity to serve as Inglewood's new city manager. "Artie Fields is the best person to guide our City staff as we rebuild Inglewood and position our community to become a premier destination city," said Butts. "His broad experience and proven track record of success made him stand out among the quality candidates that applied for the position. He is the right person at the right time to assume the top administrative position on our team and we are fortunate to have him in Inglewood."
In addition to working for the cities of West Covina and Salinas, Fields has also worked for the cities of Beverly Hills, Manhattan Beach, Pasadena, Pomona, and San Leandro. He holds a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology and a Masters' Degree in Public Administration from the University of Southern California.
Fields will officially begin his tenure as Inglewood City Manager on July 14, 2011.
