The Adult Division provides reference and information service to all of the library's clientele. Librarians in this division select and maintain current reference and adult materials, including automated information services, conduct tours for the public, provide informational and cultural library programs, and offer instruction in the use of library materials, resources, and automated services.
Audio-Visual Division - 310/412-5610

The Audio-Visual Division offers a selection of fiction and subject videos, audiocassettes, and compact disc recordings in English, Spanish, and Vietnamese. As a member of the Southern California Audio-Visual Circuit, the library provides access to an additional 150 unabridged recorded literature titles annually as well as a small collection of circuit Spanish-language videos. Finally, the division maintains the Language Learning Center with programs and equipment for learning Spanish, German, French, Portuguese, and English as a second language.

Children's/Youth Services resources are available to children up to the eighth grade. The division maintains a public service desk staffed by professional librarians; provides a variety of current materials with access through automated public catalogs; conducts school visits; and presents programs for children.
Circulation and Circulation Control

The Circulation Division maintains two public service circulation desks (checkout and return) at all times the Main Library is open and circulates an estimated 420,000 items at the Main Library. The Division notifies borrowers when books they have reserved are available.
Circulation Control Division (library card registration) registers some 23,000 borrowers and issues approximately 30,000 library cards each year. The division generates overdue notices for resources not returned on time.

The Hispanic Services Division provides reference and information service in Spanish during operating hours to Spanish-speaking clients. In addition, the division is charged with developing and maintaining a collection of materials and resources in Spanish. Hispanic Services staff conducts tours for the public, provide informational and cultural library programs, and offer instruction in the use of library materials and resources to Spanish-speaking clients.

The Serial Publications Division is responsible for acquiring, processing, and maintaining serial and document resources. Serials resources constitute a major part of the Library's reference and information service. The Library is a select depository for federal and state government documents. The division also maintains a public service desk and assists the public in locating materials and in the use of Gates computer workstations and microform equipment.
Stack Maintenance/Security Division - 310/412-5997

Stack maintenance aides keep up book stacks by shelving and shelf-reading the Main Library book collection of some 370,000 volumes. The division's staff, along with a contract service, provides security at the Main Library.

The Technical Services Division is responsible for obtaining, cataloging, and readying printed materials for public use. The staff maintains materials collections throughout the Library system. Technical Processing is responsible for cataloging and classifying print resources, except periodicals (which are not classified), some government documents, and audio-visual materials (which are cataloged by the Audio-Visual division). In addition, the Division continues the development of automated Library systems, working with the city's Information Technology and Communications Department as necessary.
