California is one of the fastest-growing states in the nation in total population. More importantly, the state’s elderly population is expected to grow more than twice as fast as the total population. By 2010 the elderly population (60+ years of age) in Los Angeles County is projected to be approximately 1.6 million. This will create new challenges and opportunities for local government services, profit and non-profit organizations and the philanthropic community. The attached guide is a first step in answering these new challenges and opportunities.
This guide is a multipurpose resource: It will serve to educate the general public about the various programs and services available to the elderly and their caregivers; it is an outreach tool for the elderly and their caregivers to use as a vehicle to access services they may need; and lastly, it is a tool of empowerment for individuals – both the elderly and their caregivers—to take a ‘hands-on’ approach to managing their care.
