A Brief Biography...

On May 1, 2006, Julius I. Davis was appointed as the Interim Chief of Police of the Inglewood Police Department.

Chief Davis is a native of Sioux City, Iowa. He was raised in Compton, California and graduated from Centennial High School. Following high school, he attended Compton College for a short time, and then he played professional baseball in the minor league systems of the Pittsburgh Pirates and Kansas City Athletics. Chief Davis later returned to Compton College where he received an Associate of Arts Degree in Police Science. He subsequently graduated from California State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration, and from Pepperdine University with an MPA. Chief Davis is also a graduate of the FBI National Academy, University of Southern California’s Executive Development Program, and West Point Leadership Instructor’s Program. He has attended many management seminars and participated in several executive development training programs during his years as a command and staff officer with the Los Angeles Police Department.

Chief Davis was appointed to the Los Angeles Police Department on July 31, 1967. During his more than 35 years of law enforcement experience, he worked a variety of assignments, including Organized Crime Intelligence Division, Divisional Detectives, Vice, and several command and administrative positions.

Chief Davis has held some of the most difficult commands within the Los Angeles Police Department. These have included being the commanding officer in areas noted for the level of violent crime, as well as distrust of the police. He has extensive experience with discipline and personnel issues. After being appointed to the rank of Deputy Chief of Police, he was assigned as the commanding officer for the Operations South Bureau, an area that encompasses all of South Los Angeles. He was later promoted and assigned as the commanding officer responsible for all personnel and training functions within the Department. Chief Davis retired in 2002 as an Assistant Chief of Police and the commanding officer responsible for all of the specialized uniform and detective functions within the Department. This was the largest command within the Los Angeles Police Department.

Chief Davis has been involved in many professional and social organizations including the Association of Black Law Enforcement Executives, the Peace Officers’ Association of Los Angeles County, the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the National Association of Black Law Enforcement Executives, and the FBI National Academy Associates. He was a member of the Compton Planning Commission for approximately 10 years, serving as its President for approximately two years. He also taught in the Los Angeles Unified School District’s Regional Occupation Program for approximately 10 years and has been active with youth sport activities in his community and neighborhood block clubs. Chief Davis is currently a member of the Client Security Fund for the California State Bar.
