RECYCLING AT WORK
Each day the average American throws out 4 1/2 pounds of trash. In the past, most of this trash was buried in landfills. Today, our landfills are filling up quickly. Recycling is one of the easiest ways that we can reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills
The Environmental Services is responsible for implementing various programs to meet state mandated waste reduction goals. California law, Assembly Bill 939, which states that all cities in the State must divert 50% of their waste stream by 2000 and maintain this diversion rate. In response to Assembly Bill 939, the California Integrated Waste Management Act, Ingle wood has continued to work to provide economical and efficient ways for residents and businesses to recycle.
Each year, the City diverts more than 50,000 tons of trash from landfills, enough to fill 5,000 trash trucks. End to End, these trucks would span nearly 35 miles.
Through grants from the California Integrated Waste Management Board, and the California Department of Conservation, the Environmental Division administers a Used Oil Recycling program to promote the recycling of used oil, latex paint, car batteries, anti-freeze, and used oil filters, and a Litter abatement and bottle recycling program
As we raise the importance of environmental issues to our community, it is important that the City of Inglewood continues to search out proactive and cost-effective solutions to address our growing environmental needs. To assure a long-term environmental quality of life in our community, residents need to play a vital role in helping to bring about positive environmental change and to protect precious economic and natural resources.
