2009 Holiday Decorating Contest
Plans are underway for this year's Holiday Decorating Contest and Inglewood is encouraging all residents to decorate their homes this holiday season and showcase their spirit.

The Contest is open to all Inglewood residents and block clubs. Contestants are judged on elements such as elaboration, creativity and complexity. Holiday prizes will be given to first, second and third place winners in Individual and Group categories. All entries will receive certificates for their participation.

2009 Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony
On Thursday, December 3, 2009, Inglewood residents, their families and friends are encouraged to join Inglewood's Mayor and Council Members for the City's Annual Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony. The Event will take place at Inglewood City Hall - South Mall at 5:30 p.m. City Hall is located at One Manchester Blvd. The event will include entertainment, arts & crafts, refreshments for all and a special holiday visit by Santa. The entire community is encouraged to attend this festive holiday event.

2009 Breakfast with Santa
On Saturday, December 12, 2009, the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department will host "Breakfast with Santa." The event will take place at Darby Park located at 3400 West Arbor Vitae, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The event will begin promptly at 9:30 a.m. with breakfast and a special holiday show. Immediately after the show, children will have the opportunity to make up to five holiday crafts. Crafts include creative Christmas cards, holiday picture frames, ornament making and personalized photos with Santa. Join us for some holiday cheer. Create your own holiday gifts and get a jump start on the holiday season. Don't forget your camera. Tickets must be purchased in advance. The cost is $3 (ages 1-14) and $5 (ages 15 & up). Tickets will not be sold at the door. The last day to purchase tickets will be Tuesday, December 8, 2009. Tickets are available for purchase at Inglewood City Hall, Cultural Office - 7th Floor.

Caregiver Conference
Are you a grandparent serving as a parent again?  Are you caring for a Senior Citizen or for a disabled adult?  Perhaps you are in need of strategies to avoid caregiver burnout or could benefit from caregiver resource information.  If you answered YES to any of these questions then you should plan to attend the Inglewood Neighborhood Action Council Cheerful Givers from the Heart Caregiver Conference.  

The Caregiver Conference will take place on Saturday, June 6, 2009 at the Gladys Waddingham Library Lecture Hall, 101 W. Manchester Blvd, from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.  Admission to this event is FREE and all are invited.

Accolades Continue for the “History of Transportation Mural” Preservation
The City has yet another wonderful recognition by a prestigious publication for the restoration work done on the History of Transportation Mural.  The January/February 2009 edition of American Art Review magazine features the mural in an 8-page story, written and submitted by Anita Bennett of Young Communications of Los Angeles.

SENIOR CITIZEN “BE WELL” EXERCISE AND NUTRITION PROGRAM A NATIONAL MODEL
Thirty (30) seniors in Inglewood who have extremely high nutritional risk scores, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, dehydration, and a variety of chronic illnesses are showing great improvement as a result of their participation in the “Be Well” nutrition and exercise program, offered by the Inglewood Senior Center, 330 Centinela Avenue , Inglewood, CA  90302.  They are meeting twice a week for four months, and will continue weekly maintenance classes for an additional six months. This second “Be Well” class that has been offered at the Senior Center is funded by the federal Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Administration on Aging as a national model of health and wellness.

Free Computer Classes for Senior Citizens
Beginning Monday, January 4, 2010, the Lockhaven Community Center will offer a "free" Introduction to Computers class for senior citizens. This fun and exciting class is designed for those with little or no computer experience. Students will learn how to start and turn off a computer, open and close programs, search the internet for information and how to send and receive E-mail. Participants will also have the opportunity to learn how to create, save and print documents using Microsoft programs. Classes will be held on Mondays and Wednesday from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Pre-registration is required and space is limited. Fields for baseball, soccer, and football are available for rental at Darby, Rogers, and Vincent Parks. For more information on fees and schedules, please call Vincent Park at (310) 412-5370, Rogers Park at (310) 412-5504, and Darby Park at (310) 412-5391.

Racquet Ball and Weight Room Facilities Available
Racquet Ball and Weight Room facilities are available for use by residents and the community at large at both Rogers Park and Darby Park. A monthly membership fee is required. The racquet ball membership fee is $12 (resident) and $14 (non-residents); weight room membership is $10 (resident) and $12 (non-residents).
