INGLEWOOD PARTNERS WITH LAOIC TO CREATE ENTRY LEVEL JOBS IN THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY
INGLEWOOD, CA – The City of Inglewood has developed a unique partnership with the Los Angeles Opportunities Industrialization Center, Inc. (LAOIC) to create a free automotive maintenance on-the-job training program for young people ranging in age from 16-21.  The program, managed and operated by LAIOC, offers basic entry-level automotive training classes and hands on opportunities to practice class work in the Inglewood Public Works Department Service Center. A special ceremony celebrating the program will be held this Wednesday, November 30, 2005 from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. at the Inglewood Service Center located at 222 West Beach Avenue.

Through collaboration with the Automotive Oil Change of America and the owners of Quick Lube in Southern California, LAOIC has developed a certification program for youngsters provided by trained automotive maintenance professionals.  Quick Lube has committed to interview talented graduates of the program for available entry-level positions.  California Fleet News, in its annual recognition of Best Management Practices, recognized Inglewood’s partnership with LAIOC for its innovation in assisting fleet managers to improve their operations.

The City of Inglewood’s Public Works Department will offer students in the program hands on training on City vehicles performing preventative maintenance services, including oil and filter changes, tire rotations, inspection of lights, cooling systems and charging systems, and belts and hoses.  Additional services may also include smog inspections and transmission services.

The automotive classes are six weeks for 30 hours per week.  Class spaces are limited to 10-15 students per course.  Inglewood residents are encouraged to apply.

The LAOIC has been providing employment services to the unemployed and underemployed of this region since 1994.  LAOIC is certified by the Bureau for Private Post-Secondary Vocational Education, and is a member of Opportunities Industrialization Center America (OIC), founded in 1964.
