"Make a Splash -- READ!" is the theme this summer at the Inglewood Public Library. The ChildrenYouth Services Division is continuing its annual summer reading challenge to encourage children and teens to continue to read for pleasure over the summer months. Principal Librarian Angela Citizen notes that "Research has proven that summer reading is critical for students to maintain their skill level beyond the school year. Those students who read at least four books during summer vacation perform better on tests in the fall than those who do not." The 2010 Summer Reading Challenge is open to young people, preschool through young adult, who reside in California.
Youth who participate will receive incentives for reading five or more books. Prizes include book bags, reading certificates, and food certificates. To date, this yearsors include In 'N Out, Carl's Jr., Rally's, 7-11, Golf N Stuff, LEGOLAND, and Target.
The Summer Reading Challenge will have a variety of daytime and evening events including storytimes, crafts, movies and more throughout the months of July and August. The Friends of Inglewood Public Library will be sponsoring professional presenters and entertainers.
