Volunteers Lend Hand to Help Build a Dream

KaBOOM! Home Depot Playground Build

Amazing, rewarding, fun and hard work are all words that were used to describe the KaBOOM! Playground Build held recently at Ashwood Park.  On Thursday, September 23, 2010, the City of Inglewood partnered with KaBOOM!, Home Depot, North Inglewood Little League and other community volunteers to build a new play space at Ashwood Park located at 201 S. Ash Avenue.

KaBOOM! is a national non-profit that works with communities to build playgrounds within walking distance of every home.  An integral part of the playground build process included community based planning by volunteers who helped design and build the playground.  On August 2, the City convened a group of approximately 40 children, ages 5 to 12, to work with professional designers to design their dream play space.  Parents and other community members then met to discuss how to make it happen.

Following a two-month planning process, over 200 volunteers rallied to replace well worn play structures with new equipment that includes swings, a climbing wall, double slides, an adventure bridge, activity center, and overhead climbers.

Volunteers rolled up their sleeves €oving mulch, planting trees, building benches, painting restrooms and picnic tables, and actually assembling and helping to install both playground and fitness equipment.

The event also included participation by Clint Mathis, retired Galaxy soccer star, Chivas USA player Dan Kennedy and the Chivas Girls, who helped with the build as part of the Celebration of Service project through Home Depot.

When the volunteers arrived at the site early Thursday morning, it was bare.  However, when they left just six hours later, there was a brand new safe play space as well as other improved amenities.

Was the experience amazing, rewarding, fun and hard work?  Absolutely, but worth it!  Ashwood Park has a new playground that will be enjoyed by Inglewood€children and families for years to come.

This was the City of Inglewood€second KaBOOM! award.  The Ashwood Park KaBOOM! Build was sponsored by Home Depot Foundation with additional support from North Inglewood Little League, Waste Management, LAX Tacos, West Basin Municipal Water District, Inglewood Youth Soccer League, RJ€Demolition, West Central Produce, and Armondo Gonzalez.
