On Saturday, January 15, 2011, the City of Inglewood will host its annual Dr. Martin Luther King Day Celebration. This year's memorial of Dr. King's Legacy will be extremely significant as it is Inglewood 28th annual commemoration of the life and accomplishments of Dr. King. Inglewood was one of the first cities in the nation to designate Dr. King's birthday a legal holiday.
Inglewood's King Day celebration will include a rousing ecumenical service beginning at 9:00 a.m. in The Tabernacle of Faithful Central Bible Church located at 321 N. Eucalyptus Avenue.
Under the banner of "Believe, Achieve and Succeed," the City's King Day event will feature performances by local choirs and community groups, as well as participation from Inglewood's Mayor and Council Members and special guests. KTLA News Anchor, Michaela Periera will serve as the mistress of ceremonies, and actor Gbenga Akinnagbe, from CBS's "The Good Wife" will serve as grand marshal. Finally, the grand finale for the program will be the thunderous and moving award-winning speeches from our citywide MLK Day speech contest.
The winners will represent four grade categories including the early elementary (K-2); elementary (3-5); middle school (6-8); and high school (9-12) grade levels. The winners in each category will speak on the topic "Believe! Achieve! Succeed!"
Inglewood's Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration will be an inspiring event that will reflect the continued commitment of our community to the concepts of freedom, equality, and mutual respect that Dr. King inspired. Join us!
