Inglewood Celebrates the Life and Accomplishments of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

On Saturday, January 14, 2012, the City of Inglewood will host its annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration.  This year's memorial of Dr. King's legacy will be extremely significant in that it is Inglewood's 29th annual commemoration of the life and accomplishments of Dr. King.  

"Inglewood takes great pride in the fact that we were one of the first cities in the nation to honor Dr. King's achievements by designating his birthday as an official holiday," said Inglewood Mayor James T. Butts, Jr.  "We expect to have an outstanding program this year and we invite everyone to join us in the celebration."

Inglewood's King Day celebration will include a rousing ecumenical service beginning at 9:00 a.m. in The Tabernacle of Faithful Central Bible Church, located at 321 N. Eucalyptus Avenue. Under the banner. "Defining the Dream in an Era of Change,"€he City's King Day event will feature performances by local choirs and community groups, as well as participation from Inglewood's Mayor, Council Members and special guests.  KTLA News Anchor Michaela Periera will serve as the mistress of ceremonies, and actress Anna Maria Horsford, from the BET series "Reed Between the Lines,"€d KJLH radio personality, Adai LaMar will serve as grand marshals. 

Musical inspiration will be provided by Inglewood's very own Greater New Bethel Mass Choir, regional finalists for the Verizon Wireless "How Sweet the Sound" Choir Competition.  The finale of this gala event will feature inspirational award-winning speeches from our citywide youth MLK Day speech contest.

The winners represent four grade categories including the early elementary (K-2); elementary (3-5); middle school (6-8); and high school (9-12) grade levels.  The winners in each category will speak on the topic€efining the Dream in an Era of Change."

Immediately following the ecumenical ceremony, the celebration will continue with a family festival on the grounds of Darby Park, 3400 W. Arbor Vitae.  The festival will begin at 11:00 a.m. and include entertainment, a job resource fair, interactive games, and food and commercial vendors.

Inglewood's Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration will be an inspiring event that will reflect the continued commitment of our community to the concepts of freedom, equality, and mutual respect that Dr. King inspired.  Join us!
