California Veterans Resource Book Ch. 4: Education
Chapter 4.  This chapter of the California Veterans Resource Book explains the educational benefits veterans and their family members may be eligible for, such as the GI Bill, college fee waivers for dependents, and apprenticeship programs.


Federal Benefits and Programs

VA Education and Training Programs
While the GI Bill is the most well know, there are various federal benefits available to advance the education and skills of eligible veterans, servicemembers, and their families. For more information and assistance applying, contact your local CVSO.

Troops to Teachers
The Troops to Teachers program assist transitioning Service members and veterans in beginning new careers as K-12 school teachers in public, charter, and Bureau of Indian Affairs schools.


State Benefits and Programs

CalVet Education
CalVet’s online tool for searching through the wide variety of approved education and training programs for veterans, including: apprenticeship and on-the-job training, college degree and certificate programs, flight training, and correspondence courses.

Non-Resident College Fee Waiver
The Non-Resident College Fee Waiver waives non-resident fees at all State of California Community College (CCC), California State University (CSU), or University of California (UC) campuses. See Chapter 4 of the Veterans Resource Book to check your eligibility, and contact your local CVSO for information on applying.

College Fee Waiver for Veteran Dependents
The College Fee Waiver for Veteran Dependents waives mandatory system-wide tuition and fees at a CCC, CSU, or UC campus.

Veterans Internship Program
The LA County Veterans’ Internship Program provides paid internships for qualified veterans of the Armed Forces of the United States. The internships afford veterans with on‑the‑job training and work experience that will enable them to effectively compete for permanent County positions.

CA National Guard Education Assistance Award Program
Active members of the California National Guard, the State Military Reserve, or the Naval Militia may be eligible for a state-funded program designed to provide an educational incentive to improve skills, competencies, and abilities.

California State University Troops to College Program
The California State University system offers numerous resources and services to help veterans, active-duty service members, and their families meet their personal and professional goals.
