Code Enforcement of Illegal Carports

About Carports

During the summer months, canopy-type structures tend to appear in many driveways and backyards. Long after the summer months have disappeared, a number of these canopies will remain as temporary or illegal carports. The City of Inglewood does not issue temporary permits for carports over the driveway. A porte cochere (driveway canopy) must be permanently attached to a main dwelling unit in a residential zone.

Carports and porte cocheres cannot be used in lieu of the code required parking garage.

Permits

A permit must first be obtained in order to have a carport or porte cochere in the city of Inglewood. All requests for permits must go through the Planning Division located at
Inglewood City Hall
1 Manchester Boulevard
4th Floor
Inglewood, CA 90301

Once Planning has approved the request in form, materials and location, the Code Enforcement Division will be notified. This process prevents the illegal use and construction of structures that diminish both the look and safety standards of our community.

Citations

The City's code enforcement officers under the following Inglewood Municipal Code sections will cite property owners who erect "illegal carports":
  • 12-13.3 - Porte Cochere
  • 12-43 (a) - Residential Parking Requirements
  • 12-50 (a) - Location of Parking
Additionally, a carport built in the rear of the property does not satisfy the City's residential parking requirements. Residential parking must be provided in a fully enclosed parking garage.
