Police Explorer Program
The Inglewood Police Explorer Post Number 651 operates as a partnership between the Inglewood Police Department and Learning for Life, a branch of the Boy Scouts of America. The program is designed for males and females between the ages of 14 and 18. Eligible participants may be allowed to remain part of the program until they reach their 21st birthday.
The Inglewood Police Explorer Post provides youth with the opportunity to gain insight into law enforcement as a profession in addition to taking part in a multitude of community services benefiting the City of Inglewood and its police department. The purpose of the program is not to recruit teenagers to become future police officers, but to simply serve as a way for them to explore a rewarding profession. The program, however, is not a correctional course for at-risk youth, nor is it a "boot camp" for incorrigible teenagers.
Many of our Explorers have moved on to become police officers or have gained employment in other law enforcement related fields. Others have moved on to work in the private sector or the U.S. military. Whatever their ultimate choice may be, participants gain valuable training and experience, as well as development life-long friendships and mentorship.
Inglewood Police Explorers participate in physical training, as well as criminal law and police operations. They may serve the Inglewood Police Department by volunteering their time working at the police station front desk, participating in a ride-along with an Inglewood Police Officer, conducting station tours, and providing child fingerprinting services. Inglewood Police Explorers are volunteers and participate in non-hazardous police activities. They are fully insured while participating in sponsored activities.
The Inglewood Police Explorer Program is open to teenagers who possess, at minimum, the following qualifications:
Upon being accepted into the program, candidates will attend the South Bay Regional Explorer Academy, held at El Camino College in the City of Torrance. The academy is 12 weeks long and is held 2 times per year. Completion of the explorer academy is mandatory to serve as an Inglewood Police Explorer. Academy classes typically begin in February and August. Academy classes are always held on Saturdays. There is a nominal cost associated with the initial application to the program, however, all duty uniforms and equipment will be provided by the Inglewood Police Department. Eligibility
The Inglewood Police Explorer Program is open to teenagers who possess, at minimum, the following qualifications:
- Have an interest in the law enforcement profession.
- Be at least fourteen (14) years of age and no older than eighteen (18) years of age or beginning their senior year of high school.
- Reside in the City of Inglewood.
- If not a resident of the city, attend a school within the City of Inglewood.
- If not a resident or student in the city, have a parent that lives or works in the City of Inglewood.
- Be free of any misdemeanor or felony convictions. Note that certain detainments, arrests, or negative police contacts will be taken into consideration for eligibility.
- Be free of alcohol of drug usage/abuse.
- Be able to pass a physical examination conducted by a physician.
- Possess and maintain a minimum 2.0 grade point average.
- Be able to pass a background inquiry.
South Bay Regional Explorer Academy
